From Shimmy With Love

Hello!  My name is Shimmy Hendrix, and I am the sponsorship manager for the Long Island Roller Rebels.  The Rebels are the international Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby Association’s foremost league on Long Island.  That’s right.  We’re number 1 on Long Island.

It’s good to be number 1.  But it takes a lot of work to stay here.  Hours of practice and hard work by our coaching staff, and dedicated skaters have not been in vain.  We are a completely volunteer run organization, so it’s the generous partnerships and sponsors that help fund our practice spaces, bout locations, uniforms, and touring operations.

We offer several different sponsorship packages as well as advertising within our home bout (game) programs.  Every month, during our home season, roughly February through November, we hold one home bout.  We distribute these beautiful programs to between 600-800 guests.  Your ad will be read!  Inside each program are the highlights to playing the game, refs and skater photos, and the goings on of our team.  It’s not just an advertising piece.

For more information and prices, please feel free to email me or reach me on my cellular phone at (347) 200-9796.  I look forward to hearing from you.

Warm Regards,
Shimmy Hendrix

Happy Weekend!

Too cold to skate outside?  This guy would beg to differ!

We've got a bit of snow on the way and a league scrimmage to help get us ready for our upcoming bouts.  What are your plans for the weekend?

The Return of The Three

The Roller Rebels are now in their 8th season!  From one season to the next, the league has switched on and off from having three home teams and one all star or A team, to having only an A and a B team and then back again.  Last season we had two teams; All Stars and The Rockabetty Bruisers.

This season, we have five teams!  Our A and B Teams - All Stars and Rockabetty Bruisers PLUS our three home teams; The Ladies of Laceration, The Wicked Wheelers, and The Rolling Thundercats. What does this mean for you?  You get a little bit of everything!  Root for your favorite home team and root for the Rebels when they play against other leagues.

Personally, I'm super excited for the return of the home teams.  It's really fun and interesting to play against your teammates.  Imagine being at practice and partnering up with someone, and then taking a hit from that same person at a bout.  A real player is able to put all of their feelings aside and do what it takes to win the game.  We each know however, that it's all in good fun!

I know who I'm rooting for. Who are you rooting for?

Well Hello!

I hope your holidays were wonderful and must apologize for not having a derby holiday gift guide up for 2012, but I will try and make it up to you!

In the meantime, I'm here to let you know that as always, there are a lot of fun events and things in store for our new season, starting with a party!  What better way to start things off than with a party, right?  We always do our best to get to know our new girls and now you can join in too.  Meet us Friday, February 1st, at the Leaky Lifeboat and join in on the fun.

I'll be back soon with the 2013 schedule and some more goodies!

It's Been A Long Time

Last night after being away for quite a while, I went to a league practice.  Truth be told, I've had a lot of stress lately and on Monday night I had a bit of a mini breakdown.  We all go through these times - I am no different than anyone else in that respect.  It's hard sometimes to pick yourself up and get it together, but if you want to feel better, it's just what you have to do.  Thankfully, the solution for me on how to do this was staring at me from the corner of my bedroom where my bag with skates and the rest of my gear stood.  After getting the OK from Captain Morgan, I picked up that bag and made my way over to the rink.

The greeting I got from the girls, some of whom don't know me well, was overwhelming!  First step I thought to myself to feeling better is this room full of family welcoming me in.

Once my skates were on my feet and I glided across the rink, it was as if I never left.  I was smiling like a child as my speed picked up and I made my way around the big circle.  As I rolled along I forgot everything that was on my mind which pushed me to keep going.  In between my laps, I watched the girls practice.  It was fun to see how they've improved and how well they worked together.  This place, this sport, this league always make me feel like I've come home no matter how long I've been away.

I left the rink feeling fantastic!  I was happy, stress-free and so inspired (and I still am now).  I also left feeling comforted in knowing that I am still a part of this wonderful league to which I attribute so many positive things in my life to.

For last night and for all of the time I've ever spent with the Roller Rebels, I want to send out thanks to the league and also to my Riedells, who always manage to turn things around for me.
