I cannot believe that almost a year has gone by since our last recruitment. Coming up this November 9th, another Long Island Roller Rebel recruitment night will take place (more information to come).
This is one of my favorite events of the season! As a coach, I love seeing skaters work their way from tryout to triumph. It's a learning process that is different for each individual and teaching them new skills along the way is very rewarding for me.
As a league we do a lot of work to prepare for tryouts. Committees meet to discuss and organize our plans for the night. Who will collect IDs, take photos, check gear. Which coach will work with which group and so much more. Once the tryouts are over, our night continues. We need to discuss all of the possible candidates. Who made the cut and why. Who didn't and why not?
As hard as our jobs are, the ones working the hardest are you girls out on the rink showing us what you've got. Tryouts can be overwhelming if you don't have all of the information you need. So please visit our recruitment page for more information. We've pretty much answered it all on there, but if you find you still have more questions, you can always contact our head of recruitment Violet Knockout (violetknockout@longislandrollerrebels.com).
To help you new ladies out with your skills, we will be holding two boot camps prior to tryouts. The boot camps will take place at Skate Safe on October 16th and October 30th from 10:00AM - 12:00PM. Each day will cost $10 and attendants are required to bring all of their gear. Required gear includes quad roller skates, knee, elbow and wrist pads, helmet and mouthgard. To sign up or for more information, please email Vixxen Bone (vixxenbone51n@yahoo.com). The boot camps will involve basic derby skills and drills. No experience is necessary, but you must be 21 and over.
I'll be back with some more information on recruitment night, but until then, keep practicing!
